The K7LI Universal Straight Key Base is designed to accept many popular vintage and modern keys. We don't guarantee it will work with every straight key out there, but it has been tested with many. The 4"x 6", 3/16-inch-thick steel base has a variety of threaded 6-32 mounting holes + 2 non-thread 5/32" holes. Please see the list below for information on compatible keys and hole spacing. The steel plate is attached to non-slip rubber feet and weighs 1.3 pounds, so it provides a sound anchor for sending CW. The black powder coated steel plate is covered with a textured black 1/8" thick plastic cover slightly bigger than the key base. (Note: first production run was painted black). Hardwood covers are also available. The cover ships with no holes but the bottom of the cover has guide holes that extend about halfway through the cover. You pick the holes for your key and finish drilling or knocking out the hole in the cover which then perfectly aligns with the steel base. It was designed and manufactured in Utah with US sourced steel.
The base ships with 6-32 machine screws (2 round head ½” brass screws with washers, 2 flat head ½” screws and two round head 7/8” screws with nuts) with will work on most key. Scroll down to see the instruction sheet for adapting the top plate.
All keys mount with 6-32 machine screws directly into the base except as noted and are compatible with the following:
If we have missed a common hole spacing or key, let me know and we will look at incorporating it in the next production run. Scroll down to see the instruction sheet for adapting the top plate.
The optional hardwood cover is CNC machined to perfectly enclose the steel plate. This option is for those who prefer wood over plastic.
We also offer a limited selection of vintage restored keys and bugs. Every key we restore is as close to the original as we can get it. We gently clean and polish each key as best we can. These are vintage keys and most show wear and tear. If any parts have been replaced with modern equivalents, we try to mention that in the product description. Most of our keys are sold on our base. Our Inventory is constantly changing, and we frequently only have one of a particular key. What you see in the product description is what you get.
We also restore straight keys and Vibroplex bugs. Send us a picture for a quote. Restorations start at $100 and go up depending on needed work. This is an Original Vibroplex bug from circa 1918 (SN# 61,624) before restoration. The base is in rough shape, the arbor was bent and the whole thing needed some serious love and attention.
This is the same bug after restoration. The key was completely disassembled, the base was stripped and japanned (black shiny finish). Parts were straightened, cleaned and badly corroded parts were nickel plated. The key works as good as new. An extra speed weight was added to slow it down a bit.
